Batalha Monastery

The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitoria, also called Batalhas’s Monastery is arguably one of the most beautiful works of Portuguese and European architecture is the most significant monument of Gothic in Portuguese space.

This exceptional architectural complex resulted from the fulfillment of a promise made by King John I in gratitude for the victory in Aljubarrota battle fought on August 14, 1385, which assured him the throne and secured the independence of Portugal.

It is also one of the 7 wonders of Portugal.
